The East River Wind Power Study (ERWPS), (New York, NY - 2002)
ERWPS was devised as an in-house research program to evaluate the potential of clean energy generation within the boundaries of New York City. It was discovered that the East River had a strong opportunity for wind turbine integration. The eastern riverbank and shoreline which borders Brooklyn and Queens showed ideal energy-creation opportunity. During the study, it was found that the area between the Williamsburg Birdge and Roosevelt Island had both the space and velocity of wind necessary. The study concluded that between 30 to 40 large wind turbines (sized at 1 to 3 megawatts) could be constructed within the targeted area. The construction would consider such issues as maintaining shipping lanes and site lines for residents. The amount of energy could be equal to the annual needs of 500,000 homes in Brooklyn.
